Edward Weston: Life Work. At City Art - the show of the year?

Edward Weston (1886- 1958) is renowned as one of the masters of 20th century photography. His legacy of carefully composed and superbly printed photographs has influenced photographers around the world. This major exhibition, the largest ever to be shown in the UK, presents a survey of this great American artist, and contains an outstanding group of over 100 vintage prints from all phases of Weston’s career. The exhibition encompasses all the themes for which he is best known. Among the earliest works on show is a striking 1909 study of his wife Flora, which is perhaps Weston’s first nude, while a 1907 desert image foretells his later passion for landscape. His stay in Mexico heralded a new, trimmed down approach which led on to his memorable still life photographs of the late 1920s. They in turn fed naturally into a remarkable set of sculptural nudes in 1933-1934. Subsequently, Weston’s style loosened as he turned to the open landscape. Life Work includes an important suite of six dune studies made near Oceano, California in 1934 and 1936. The exhibition concludes with Weston’s consummate final photograph, nicknamed The Dody Rocks, from 1948.

Street Level: Futureproof [Some] New Photography in Scotland 6th August - 12th September

Futureproof is a chosen selection of work from [some] graduates in 2010 of Scotland's dedicated photography courses: Edinburgh College of Art, Glasgow School of Art, Gray's School of Art (Aberdeen), Glasgow Metropolitan College, and Napier University (Edinburgh). The show aims to capture something of the full range of ways that younger and emerging artists engage with photography, from creating documentary to tell stories of others, or to examine one's own private life; the photograph as a metaphor for memory; the excavation of neglected sites from the past; or the telling of fictional stories, to work that may seem banal, to that which is quite simply an energetic stream of consciousness.

A Celebration: Photographs by Mandy Edwards. This project draws on the social landscape of the East End of Glasgow and portrays 50 shopkeepers, workers and owners of local businesses that are trading in that area. It aims to capture something of the relationships that exist between different communities that contribute to the shaping of what our city is. For most, it is business as usual, but with the huge development of the Commonwealth Games 2014, it is forecast that this area of the city will be transformed into a hub of economic growth with likely effects on the local people and businesses. 'A Celebration' portrays the diversity of the East End, and as a consequence, a community spirit that thrives amidst the uncertainties of change.

ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAITURE WORKSHOP The Photographers’ Place workshop weekend, September 17-19 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, is on the theme of environmental portraiture, with a guest, Brian Griffin, one of Britain's most distinguished portrait photographers. The weekend is about approaches to portraiture on location. There will be plenty of practical experience, going out into the old market town in small groups, to ‘sitters’ and locations arranged in advance for you to photograph - or you can go off to do your own thing. And there will be a session on how to use lighting to improve portraits.

The three leaders, all teachers in photography and all with a wealth of experience and strong individual approaches in portraiture, are Paul Hill, Nick Lockett and Martin Shakeshaft.Brian Griffin, with his huge experience in making iconic images of famous faces, will be joining the workshop on Saturday to offer his expertise. It is an opportunity to hear four strong voices on making photographic portraits on location. There will be open feedback sessions on images made during the weekend and portfolio reviews on request. Again, it is an opportunity to ‘eat sleep and breathe’ photography for a whole weekend with supportive and like-minded practitioners in an informal environment. The fee for the weekend workshop is £300 which includes accommodation, full board and all tuition. If you would like more information and a booking form, please see http://photographersplace.co.uk/ or phone THE PHOTOGRAPHERS PLACE 01335 370183
