Jamie McAteer

Self portrait

This body of work explores a personal perspective on the disharmony between Catholicism and homosexuality and how it has influenced my life from birth to adulthood.
I believe that I was not born homosexual, rather that I have been conditioned, not intentionally but circumstantially. My work considers this theory by charting a series of personal memories of significant incidents from my life so far. The work depicts recognisable and generic spaces, allowing the viewer to construct their own interpretation of the environments. With the addition of text, I place my own memory into the work, changing the perspective of the image and addressing the disharmony between my religion, my sexuality and the spaces in which we inhabit.
