Greene Street Portraits
"I shot this series of portraits over a few days last year (2009) in New York City.
It was 17 yeas since I made the Buskers Portfolio in Glasgow and wanted to do a similar study in NYC.
I rented a studio on Greene Street (SOHO) and approached complete strangers on the street whom I found interesting and reflective of the character around that area that in recent years has been such a tourist trap.
As with The Buskers Portfolio I found it incredibly reassuring (and inspiring) how people are so willing to follow a complete stranger there and then to an unknown space and participate in a project with no reward.
More than just a documentation I see this portfolio as a celebration of character that honestly reflects true individuals at a certain time and place which is constantly evolving".
